Compassionate Care for Those
Accessing Their Right to Assisted Dying

Does the design of a room influence how dignity, choice and compassion are experienced at the end of life? And how do we ensure the care and aroha we nurture in our practice are reflected in the clinical environments we create?

We know that the physical environment can have a meaningful impact on the wellbeing of patients and whānau. Earlier this year, Tōtara Hospice opened its Rangimārie suite — a newly renovated space created for people choosing to access assisted dying.

With a dedicated bedroom and living space for whānau, the suite has been thoughtfully designed to balance comfort, privacy, compassionate care and clinical safety.

Since the End of Life Choice Act 2019 came into effect in 2021, Tōtara Hospice has remained the only hospice in Aotearoa New Zealand to provide integrated assisted dying support services.

The Rangimārie suite raises an important question: how can the spaces in which care is provided better reflect the dignity, aroha and choices of the people within them?
